Freddie Gibbs and Beef: “Yep it is me and I don’t give a fuck”

Freddie Gibbs has a common denominator in beef over his career. He is constantly in less than favorable exchanges with someone. It is so bad that a fan joked about the situation on Twitter and Freddie agreed.

On April 5, a fan joked about the beef, saying that he is starting to think that it is Gibbs that is starting them. However, within the hour Gibbs responded to the tweet, saying that it is him and he doesn’t care.

The most recent beef that Gibbs has had is with Benny the Butcher.

Gibbs’ beef with Benny the Butcher is over their attempt to work together not working out. Benny talked about it in an interview, saying that the opportunity “came and went”. However, Gibbs was not happy with being mentioned at all. He posted a video on Instagram telling him to not say anything next time.

“Nigga said working with Freddie Gibbs came and went. I know some other shit that came and went too, nigga. Just keep my name out y’all mouth when y’all talking to people or doing interviews and shit. Just say, ‘Next question. I don’t want to talk about that nigga, man.’ Just say, ‘Next muthafuckin’ question.’ For real.”

Gibb’s and beef

The beef before this one also follows a similar pattern. Gibbs was upset with Gunna because he implied that Gibbs was a snitch and was going to be on the show “Crime Stoppers”.

At least Freddie Gibbs is admitting that he is the one with the problem, even if he is not willing to do anything about it. The problem seems to be that Gibbs wants to be the only one that deals with his perception in the public. One thing is certain, one person he doesn’t seem to have beef with is Joe Rogan

Freddie Gibbs Rocks with Joe Rogan “I don’t think you a racist!”

No matter the grievance, there is always someone who’s got your back, as is the case with Joe Rogan and Freddie Gibbs.

Rogan’s Perceived Missteps

After surfacing a video compilation of him for the banal use of the “N” word, Joe Rogan took an excessive amount of heat. He was implicated on the spot with no need for a judge, trial, or jury. The proof was in living color, and there was no way of walking away or hiding from this.

Rogan Offers an Apology

Immediately Rogan went to work on his PR, making a video apologizing. No one outside of Rogan’s camp could assuredly understand Rogan’s intent. This made the reservation of judgment necessary, at least until hearing what Rogan had to say.

Dissecting Rogan’s Video

In the video, Rogan acknowledges the compilation and the horror of the content. He speaks on how he was horrified by the footage. The footage compiled all the times it appeared Rogan blithely used the “N” word.

Now, In the beginning, it seems Rogan is not offering an apology, at least for using the “N” word. Instead, it seems Rogan is apologizing for the way the footage was compiled. Evidently, the footage was spliced together for a specific intent. In hindsight, the video did what it was intended to do. However, that is a topic for another article. Subsequently, in the video, Rogan apologizes for his assumptive behavior. Finally, he acknowledges his ignorance on the matter and his present growth.

Context is King

The Rogan debacle makes an excellent point on context.

How something is perceived implicates you, no matter how inauthentic or authentic it might be. So, context is everything. The apology video provides an example. Undoubtedly, one would need to look at the video in its entirety with an open mind to make a sensible conclusion.

Not Everyone’s Mind is Open like Gibbs’

After the compilation surfaced, a few artists withdrew their support from Rogan. Some removed their entire catalogs from Spotify. A few outright chastised Rogan. As a source notes, Trevor Noah, Samuel L. Jackson, and Fat Joe were a few to go in on Rogan. FM Hip Hop covered Fat Joe’s response and the ensuing backlash. However, this was not the case with Freddie Gibbs.

Gibbs is Not Everyone

Gibbs did not quickly turn his back on Rogan. Instead, Gibb’s used his experience with Rogan to make a character assessment. So, based on what he knows of Rogan, he’s refusing to label him as a racist. In Gibbs’ words,

“I never thought you were a racist. I just think you were saying some shit you shouldn’t have said and a lot of us n-ggas say stuff that we shouldn’t say sometimes. It is what it is.”

No one can deny Gibbs’ point.

People aren’t perfect. Almost every individual has said something inane or negative in their lives at some point. Assumedly, If what was said were plastered publicly, we would find ourselves on the defense like Rogan.

Gibb’s is Not the Only One Standing in Rogan’s Corner

As the music executive,  J. Prince, points out in a post following the debacle, what’s important is what happens after the fact. According to Jprincerespect Rogan, acknowledged he didn’t know better at the time. He took responsibility.

And despite the inaccuracy of the portrait painted, Rogan did the big thing that deserves a show of humanity.

As J. Prince put it,

“I forgive him because I never want to become one of those people that are filled with unforgiveness and hate that we complain about all the time.”

Judgment is always in the hands of the beholder as Gibbs and J. Prince are proving. However, it’s so easy to take things out of context and believe everything presented in the media. Such makes discernment a necessity in these times.

So kudos to Gibbs and J. Prince for choosing a different path. It’s easy to jump on the bandwagon. Nevertheless, standing up for someone you know when they are under fire by refusing to take the position of less resistance says everything about one’s character.

Joe Rogan Spotify Deal Worth Double More Than Initially Stated

Artists Joni Mitchell and Neil Young threatened to pull their music from Spotify, citing Joe Rogan’s vaccine misinformation via The Joe Rogan Experience. Generally, Joe Rogan is no stranger to controversy.

After that, the host has repeatedly found himself in hot water. Recently, videos of him saying the N-word several times also resurfaced, prompting Singer India Arie to call him out on Instagram. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek stands by Joe Rogan through these claims. However, this situation just became more complicated.

In 2020, Spotify struck a licensing deal with the hosting rights to Joe Rogan’s podcast. According to the New York Times, there was some information about Rogan’s deal with Spotify. The number initially reportedly cost Spotify 100 million dollars. However, according to a former Spotify employee, the number might be double that.

Why The Joe Rogan Spotify Deal Might Be An Issue

On top of the Joe Rogan controversy, Spotify consistently receives criticism for not playing its artists enough for streams. This brings forth the question: If Spotify can pay millions for a podcast, can’t they pay their artists more money? Co-founder of Songwriters of North America Kay Hanley seems to think so. She said in the beginning, the streaming service made vague promises to keep the interests of the artists in mind. They didn’t follow through.

In fact, the platform used “blatant pay-to-play-schemes involving artists forgoing royalties in exchange,” said Hanley. They also fought to keep the pay rate low in court. However, this issue isn’t that simple. Allegedly, Spotify doesn’t pay the artists at all. Instead, they pay the people holding the rights to an artist’s catalog.

India Arie also appeared on a recent episode of the Daily Show to speak with Trevor Noah about the issue. In addition to her problems with Joe Rogan’s choice of words, she also notes Spotify’s streaming protocol. Of her decision to speak out, she said, “it’s about my integrity, my dignity, and hoping to create more of that for other artists, too.”

For now, organizations like Songwriters of North America and Union of Musicians and Allied Workers will continue to fight for reasonable pay. At the same time, Joe Rogan keeps his multi-million-dollar deal with Spotify.

J Prince defends Joe Rogan Against Racist Allegations “I Forgive Him”

An unexpected alliance has formed between J Prince and Joe Rogan. Earlier this week (Feb. 7) Rap-a-Lot Records CEO J Prince sprung to his defense via Instagram. “Joe Rogan is not a racist” he typed. “I know this brother. It takes a sincere individual to admit when they are wrong and have fucked up about a situation. As you can hear he’s done that and I forgive him because I never want to become one of those people that are filled with unforgiveness and hate, that we complain about all the time.”

“Let this be an example to others of the sensitivity of the word ‘n-gga’ being said by anybody other than a n-gga lol.” He ended the message by emphasizing his disapproval of people outside the black community using the n-word. It should be noted J Prince has appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience previously, similarly to other black community figureheads like Dave Chapelle and Mike Tyson.

J Prince is a well-respected figure in the Houston community. Most recently, he’s worked with Kanye West and Drake to hold the Larry Hoover benefit concert to end their years-long beef. While many still hold Rogan in low regard for his past actions, J Prince’s word has shown to hold weight in the recording industry.

Without a doubt, Former Fear Factor host and podcaster Joe Rogan has had a rough week in the media. Recently, prolific celebrities like Neil Young, Mary Trump and Sharon Stone have taken a public stand against the 54-year old for his anti-vaccine comments. In addition, his beliefs surrounding race are magnified. This after a particularly explicit compilation took the internet by storm. Despite the disapproval from many black posters on social media, he now has an unexpected figure on his side.

India Arie Calls out Joe

Rogan has utilized his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, to drive others away from the Covid-19 vaccine. “If you’re like 21 years old, and you say to me, ‘Should I get vaccinated?’ I’ll go no,” he said in an April episode. Moreover, he brought anti-vaccine figures like virologist Dr. Rover Malone, on his podcast to spout similar rhetoric. A “mass formation psychosis” is what Malone called the insistence from the public to get vaccinated.

Evidently, his most controversial content is surrounding the use of racial slurs. Last week(Feb. 4), R&B artist India Arie, took to her Instagram story to expound on why she was removing her music from Spotify. “I empathize with the people leaving for the COVID disinformation reasons and I think that they should,” Arie started. “I think that Joe Rogan has the right to say what he wants to say, I also think I have the right to say what I want to say[…] Spotify is built off the back of the music streaming. So they take the money that’s built from streaming and pay this guy 100 million dollars and they pay us .003% of a penny? Just take me off!” Intercut with the ‘Steady Love’ singers rant was a series of videos containing Rogan’s vast usage of the n-word. Take a look below:

Following the explicit video, she subsequently explained her reasoning on her story, condemning Spotify for their decision to uphold Rogan’s platform while underpaying artists. “Paying musicians a fraction of a penny? And HIM $100M? This shows the type of company they are and the company that they keep. “I’m tired” she typed. Clearly, Arie’s call to action has garnered a loud public response.

The internet turns against Joe Rogan

Several fans and political commentators met India with support. Many announced they planned to delete their Spotify accounts and never utilize the platform again in protest of Rogan.

https://twitter.com/writtenbyhanna/status/1488294980745576448?s=10

As of now, Spotify has reportedly lost 19% of its subscriber base according to a consumer poll from Forrester Research. Furthermore, that number is set to continue to rise as Spotify CEO Daniel Ek publicly defended Rogan Sunday, (Feb. 6) saying “I do not believe that silencing Joe is the answer.” Subsequently, Ek confirmed Rogan’s requests to remove episodes containing offensive language from the platform.

Joe says sorry

In the face of all the controversy, Joe Rogan has issued an official apology. He posted a brief video on his Instagram last week (Feb.5) addressing his regret and intentions to do better.

“Now, I haven’t said it in years. I certainly would never want to offend someone for entertainment with something as stupid as racism.” He says. In the apology, he references his use of racial slurs as “regretful and shameful”.

Public scrutiny has found him despite his staggering popularity. The question is, was Joe Rogan’s apology sincere? Or because of social media pressure?

Azealia Banks Speaks Out About Joe Rogan

It seems Azealia Banks wants a second chance. After a decade of bizarre and troubling antics, endless celebrity feuds and social eruptions, Banks now seeks forgiveness from the public. Using Joe Rogan and his racist comments as fuel for forgiveness. Banks stated:

“Damn, Joe Rogan is about to get a slap on the hand for being grown and knowing not to say the n-word and continue to prosper. I’m still being punished in adulthood for things I said as a kid and have repeatedly apologized for,” said Banks on Instagram. “This is not any attempt to garner sympathy but if he gets the room to learn from ‘mistakes’ and we are acknowledging that people deserve second chances and room to grow, I would’ve really benefitted from having those same opportunities extended to me when I needed them most. I definitely needed that compassion, good will, and support on multiple occasions. Not a pity party but just even the tiniest bit of support could have changed my life on levels deeper than music.”

Azealia Banks, now thirty-years old, is not far removed from controversy. As recent as five months ago Banks took to her Instagram page to criticize artist, Doja Cat. Banks wrote:

“Actually, I’m the bonafide star. Doja makes music for ten year olds and is very derivative,” Banks wrote on her Instagram Story. “Cute girl, but her attempts at witty east coast Roman reloaded flows are pitiful and not in the least amusing, And yes she looked terrible before she lost weight. But azealia & doja are miles more culturally important than any of these weak ass white socialites.”

 Is Azealia Banks Right?

In spite of Rogan’s rhetoric on race and COVID-19, Spotify CEO has announced his continued support for “old Joe.” This is after a growing number of musicians such as India Arie and other podcasters abandoned Spotify, removing their content. Expected, yeah! Rogan’s Spotify deal was rumored to be worth more than 100 million dollars and that must be recouped. The general public does not have any contractual obligation with Rogan. So, will the general public give Rogan the same “compassion, good will and support”, Banks speaks of? Will he be cancelled? Only time will tell.

Who Banks seeks “compassion, good will and support” from is unknown. Is she speaking to the public or the actual industry? We are left to assume, however it is well known her notorious antics have far surpassed her musical output. And as recent as five months ago, that hasn’t changed. Let’s hope Ms. Banks accomplishes that narrative change she seeks.

India Arie Plans To Remove Music From Spotify Over Joe Rogan’s Podcast

Like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, R&B legend India Arie plans to take down her songs from Spotify due to Joe Rogan’s podcast.

india arie
India Arie plans to pull her music from Spotify.

On Monday, January 31st, Arie took to Instagram to say she disagrees with Rogan’s “language around race.”

“I have decided to pull my music and podcast from Spotify,” she wrote. “Neil Young opened a door that I MUST walk through. I believe in freedom of speech. However, I find Joe Rogan problematic for reasons OTHER than his Covid interviews… FOR ME ITS ALSO HIS language around race. What I am talking about is RESPECT – who gets it and who doesn’t.”

According to Hip Hop DX, the artist did not reveal what she thought was an issue. However, Joe Rogan received backlash for his choice of words. The podcast host said it’s “weird” to call people Black unless they’re “100% African, from the darkest place, where they’re not wearing any clothes all day.”

India Arie Not Only Had An Issue With Joe Rogan But Came For Spotify As Well

As of February 1st, Aries music still plays on Spotify. However, she didn’t seem too thrilled with the company and how they pay each artist. She continued her Instagram post by saying, “Paying musicians a fraction of a penny and HIM $100M?” she added. “This shows the type of company they are and the company they keep.”

Joe Rogan has yet to respond directly to Arie’s statement on Instagram. Spotify, though, chimed in to say, “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators.”

india arie
Arie is not happy with Spotify for allowing Rogans Content.

FMHipHop reported early in January that this is not the first time the R&B artist called out the music industry. Arie stated in an old Instagram post referring to the 10-year challenge, “seeing old pictures reminds me of how TRASH the music industry is.” She explained the industry’s tendencies towards emphasizing racism, sexism, and deceit.

Kanye Announces That He Will Be Appearing On The Joe Rogan Experience

https://twitter.com/kanyewest/status/1317550429895622657

Yesterday, Kanye (@kanyewest) tweeted that he will be appearing on Joe Rogan‘s (@joerogan) podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), next Friday. The tweet included two screenshots of their FaceTime call and it mentioned that Rogan will allow Ye to design the set for the show. The two have been very active recently so I am definitely looking forward to what each has to say!

The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE)

Joe Rogan is an internet personality, primarily known for his career as a stand-up comedian, mixed martial arts commentator, and podcast host–he also has some minor acting experience. Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, is what launched him to fame in the late 2000s. The podcast features an array of guests who discuss current events, politics, philosophy, comedy, hobbies, and numerous other topics (inquisitr.com).

Here is a list of some recent guests on JRE (within music):

JRE on Spotify

On May 19, 2020, Rogan announced that he had signed a multi-year licensing deal with Spotify, worth an estimated $100M, making it one of the largest licensing agreements in the podcast business. The deal made JRE available on Spotify starting from September 2020 and it will be exclusive to the platform starting from January 2021. Clips from the video version will continue to be available on YouTube. Rogan, subsequently, decided to sell his Los Angeles residence and move to Texas.

“I think that where we live here in Los Angeles is overcrowded. And, I think, most of the time, that’s not a problem. But I think it’s exposing the fact that it’s a real issue when you look at the number of people that are catching COVID because of this overpopulation issue. When you look at the traffic, when you look at the economic dispair, when you look at the homelessness problem that’s accelerated radically over the last seven, ten years, I think there’s too many people here.”Joe Rogan

JRE is now ranked first on Spotify’s Podcast Charts, right above NPR News Now and The New York Times’ The Daily.

#1552 – Kanye West

Rogan is known for being very open-minded to what his guests have to say.

On September 14th, 2020, President Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump) tweeted that he was willing to have Rogan moderate a debate between Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and himself for the upcoming election. Trump’s willingness to this proposal shows Rogan’s ability to be impartial during organized debate. However, Rogen stated that he would support Bernie Sanders in the primaries.

Though this never came about, it shows the level of unbias that Rogan maintains within his work. I’m sure that he will keep it this way next Friday when he interviews Kanye. Moreover, I am also sure that Ye will have plenty to say because he has been up to a lot lately:

  • Declared fight against Universal Music Group for his masters and likened the music industry to “modern-day slave ships” on his Twitter.
  • Is active on Instagram, once again
  • Oct 16th: Release of new single Nah Nah Nah
  • Is on the official ballot for Vice President under the American Independent Party, though he has influenced voters through Twitter to write him in instead.
