How a Viral Talk Show Inspired the Epic Single ‘The Boy is Mine’

It’s official: 90s R&B icons Brandy Norwood and Monica are set to embark on their “The Boy is Mine” tour, visiting cities across the globe. The duo reportedly has a fascinating story about the song that inspired the tour’s name—a tale that might surprise many, or perhaps not.

Enter Brandy Norwood

In the 1990s, R&B dominated the music scene. Two of the most prominent artists of the era were Brandy and Monica. Brandy began making her impact at just 15 years old. But her journey started much earlier. According to Mississippi Writers and Musicians, Brandy Norwood was auditioning for record labels by the age of 11, and she secured a contract by 14. Her debut album, released in 1994, received widespread acclaim. By 1995, she was attending the Billboard Awards. In 1996, she won an MTV award for her hit “Sittin’ Up In My Room.” That same year, she was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist, among other accolades, cementing her status as a bona fide success.

Monica Takes Center Stage

Monica, much like her peer Norwood, developed a passion for music early on. In her youth, she won numerous competitions before achieving widespread success. According to Black Music Scholar, Monica joined “Charles Thompson and the Majestics” at just ten years old, making her their youngest member. By age 11, she had reportedly been offered a deal. But by 13, she had signed. Her first album was released in 1993, and her debut, “Miss Thang,” went triple platinum. It was clear that Monica possessed extraordinary talent, and she continued to release successful projects, consistently proving herself as a powerhouse in the music industry.

The Boy is Mine

In 1998, two immensely talented singers collaborated on their highly successful and memorable track “The Boy Is Mine.” The song achieved great commercial success. As BET highlights, the song spent 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, earning them a Grammy. It’s often difficult to determine when something will become a timeless marker of an era. “The Boy is Mine” achieved just that.

Years later, it was given new life. An updated version featuring Ariana Grande alongside Norwood and Monica rekindled the nostalgia and excitement for what the song represented to many teenagers of that time.

“That cameo sparked a viral moment online, and shortly after, they recorded the official remix with Grande, which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, years after the original won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group in 1999,”

as noted by BET.

The Boy is Mine Tour

The two influential artists are joining forces for a tour inspired by their legendary song. But how did the idea originate? In a recent interview, it was disclosed that a viral talk show sparked the concept. Norwood mentioned,

“I was a huge fan of Jerry Springer. One of the topics was ‘The boy is mine,’ and I thought, ‘Oh my God.’ Song idea. Let’s do this’.”

Although it might seem like a surprising backstory, it’s fascinating and highlights the nature of creativity. Creativity knows no bounds—it can emerge from any place, person, or time. This story illustrates how ideas often find those destined to realize them. It’s doubtful that any other artists could have achieved the same level of success with this song as these two talented women.

Nostalgia and The Ultimate R&B Tour

The tour is set for 24 cities, beginning on October 16 and concluding a few weeks before Christmas on December 7. Joining them on the tour will be Muni Long, Jamal Roberts, and Kelly Rowland.

Ray J Defends Brandy Leg Tattoo

Ray J isn’t keeping quiet as some disapprovals meet his new tattoo, with the sister, Brandy, on his leg.

The singer is not done yet with his intention – “full leg tatt – “I had to start with my best friend!!” he said. Ray J is not looking for approvals as he is out to get his whole leg “tatted with – music- love – scriptures – the vocal Bible – family- ghosts – positive words and themes.”

If there are dislikes for his new tattoo, Ray J doesn’t care. What matters to him is love, and he loves his sister, Brandy, for her role in his life.

Ray J’s elder sister, Brandy Norwood, is a model, songwriter, singer, and actress who also goes by the title “the Vocal Bible.”

Brandy, whose songs include “I do it for you” and “Best Friend,” has been playing the role of “big sister” to Ray J. It actually goes beyond the family walls, well into the entertainment industry.

The “let it go” and “one wish” singer recently unveiled his new tattoo. Equally important is that it displays a red-eyed image of Brandy with a “Best Friends” caption on his leg. That has continued attracting several comments.

Consequently, Ray J has dismissed it as the artist’s style.

What Really Matters to Ray J

In fact, the singer, actor, and television personality wants to use the tattoo to appreciate Brandy. Ray J’s sister has been helping him tag along and get to the top in the industry. Ray J, therefore doesn’t have an apology for anyone unhappy with the tattoo. “My leg is my leg,” he told TMZ.

Moreover, it could also serve as a way of projecting the relationship with Brandy. For instance, those unaware that the two top performers are siblings, as was the case recently with American rapper Jack Harlow.

Again, for Ray, the most important thing is that he loves his sister, and love kills hate.

Ray J Gets Mixed Reaction On New Ink Of Brandy

On July 5th Ray J hopped on Instagram to share an exciting development, his new body art. Not everyone, however, was praiseworthy.

Ray J. Gets Inked

Recently Ray J took a trip to the tattoo parlor to get a special tat of his sister on his leg. It’s no secret Ray J is close to his sister Brandy, so those who understand the relationship between the two weren’t surprised to see another tattoo celebrating his sibling. This tattoo reads:Best Friends 4 Ever from Ray J with love.”

Respectfully, those who don’t get it won’t. Besides, this isn’t the first art he’s obtained for his sister.

Tats of Fam No New Thing

It’s not abnormal for people to get ink of their loved ones. Many have received tats of their significant others, children, first loves, and other major figures in their lives. Plenty of ink serves to commemorate the dead. So, what’s a sign of appreciation between two very close siblings?

A Mixed Reaction

The chatter revolved less around the meaning behind the tattoo and more around the ink itself. Some observers called out the art as being in poor taste. For example, Ray J chose pink for his sister’s eyes, and social media users took issue with that. “Why she look high???” one poster commented.

And some just felt the art was off. In the end those are simply dissenting opinions, which isn’t new.

The Issue with Tats

Tats constitute a significant art form, so one must choose the right artist. Unlike any other blank canvas, the tattoo artist’s canvas is the body. And one thing is sure—bad ink is hard to come back from.

Ray J Responds

Whatever the posters think, Ray J digs it.

First, he extolled his tattoo artist. “New @Brandy TATTOO BY ONE OF THE GREATEST!! @mashkow,” he Instagrammed.

Then he explained he had a tat in mind as an addition to the one he just recently received. In the same post, he described his vision for a tattoo sleeve on his leg, which he referred to as The Holy Leg.

No Explanation Necessary

Art is art. By art’s very nature, not everyone will get it, and so not everyone will vibe with the ink you get. Sometimes, you have to like what you like, or you’ll forever be doing things to please others. The most important thing is that Ray J likes it, and Brandy doesn’t take issue with it.

Brandy’s own response was simple. “Brooooooo♥️♥️♥️♥️,” she Instagrammed.

So more power to Ray J for walking his path and doing what makes him feel good, despite the naysayers.

Brandy Reacts to Ray J’s Viral Verzuz Performance

Ray J has become an overnight meme after his rough rendition of “One Wish.” But Brandy is coming to the rescue.

Ray J Hits The Stage

Last night’s (Jun 23) Omarion/Mario Verzuz was action-packed, to put it extremely lightly. From a watermelon eating contest to verbal jabs to a medley of covers, it was chaotic in the best way. Like he tends to do, Ray J stood out as the unintentional comic relief. In addition to the titular battle of the night, Ray J treated the audience to a performance of his 2005 hit “One Wish.”

Reviews were…mixed.

https://twitter.com/thejessiewoo/status/1540158126758002689?s=21&t=6XNEyKIRYxwwdENguzHm_w

“Ray J was better off letting Sammie sing “One Wish” The vocals not vocaling,” one viewer typed.

“ray j clearly aint practice them vocals since one wish came out,” another account tweeted. Obviously, the Love and Hip Hop alumni wasn’t on his A-Game. After all, a lot has changed in 17 years. What hasn’t changed is the support from his sister Brandy Norwood.

Many noted while viewers, tweeters, and even fellow vocalists were poking fun at Ray J, Brandy stayed in his corner. The Grammy award-winning star could clearly be seen in the live Verzuz audience, smiling and holding up her phone. Despite the naysayers, Brandy looked particularly proud during her brother’s song.

Family matters

Indeed, The “Moesha” legend always takes up for her sibling. In 2018, Kim Kardashian and Ray J came to blows online after The Sun released an article alleging the “Sexy Can I” artist revealed some explicit details from their infamous sex tape.

Kim then responded to the article on Twitter by calling Ray J a “pathological liar.” Ray subsequently posted an emotional video on Instagram vehemently denying the story. “I’ve done at least 10 interviews in the past 2weeks in #London and I’ve been respectful to everyone! These rumors are false and uncalled for!” Ray J typed in the caption. “My family is all that matters and that’s all I live for”. Clearly, this situation left him rattled. Of course, Brandy backed up her bro in the comments.

“RayJ you better use your voice for you and your family!!! But you don’t need this world’s approval,” she began. “If God Be For You, Nobody Can Be Against You!!! You are #Loved by the #Divine! #Unstoppable..we just gotta #SangOnEm”

That’s only one instance of Brandy’s family values. She fired back at For the Love of Ray J’s Monica’ Danger’ Leon after she alleged Ray J was secretly gay on a radio show. “I need Danger to watch her tongue!!!” She typed in a 2010 tweet. “To say my brother is gay because he didn’t return her calls is DUMB. Go get Help!!”

Sisters know best

Despite Brandy’s reliable sibling status, she’s not scared of showing tough love. The “Boy is Mine” icon hopped on Ray J’s Instagram page today to call out his rocky vocals. In addition to this, she humorously pointed out Ray J had been deleting her comments.

“Pops told me that you didn’t drink none of the tea I made for you. He also told me that you were talking all day when I specifically said NO TALKING and only drink water and the special tea I made for you at 4 in the freaking morning.” She finished with a playful dig, “If I had one wish, you would listen to your big sis sometimes and especially for @verzuztv “

Hopefully, next time Ray J will take his sister’s advice. For now, Our one wish is for this reality tv star to keep the mic on the stand.

Finally, B-Rocka addresses Ray J being her brother. The line adds humor to the freestyle. She mentions how she is tougher than Ray J’ s sunglasses. Fans enjoyed this line by Brandy.

It’s unclear how long this light-hearted  feud will last. Currently, it’s just fun and games between Brandy and Jack Harlow but others can increase tensions on both sides. Others have already added their opinion and it has not been positive. But, the feud should remain peaceful.

Lil Uzi Vert Gets Trapped With Fans On ‘TMZ’ Bus

On Monday, footage of Lil Uzi Vert onboard the TMZ bus with some fans began to circulate online. The video showed the rapper posing for pictures and hanging out with fans. It’s unclear how Lil Uzi got onto the bus, but the people on board were ecstatic at his presence.

Uzi attempted to get off the bus, but the doors closed before he could step off. The “7AM” artist looked confused before going back to answering fan questions, mainly about his girlfriend JT.

Videos Emerge From The TMZ Bus

Plenty of videos from the TMZ bus surfaced online of fans questioning Lil Uzi Vert. In one, someone asks, “How’s JT?” to which the Philadelphia native responds, “Good, she’s in Jamaica.” In another clip, Uzi shared his thoughts on people’s criticisms of Jack Harlow, showing love to the Kentucky rapper. “No, he doesn’t have white privilege. He’s signed to Black people,” Uzi said. At the end of the clip, Uzi even acknowledges a fan before finally making his exit from the bus.

Following the release of his latest project, “Come Home The Kids Miss You,” Jack Harlow has been the topic of recent discussion. Many people felt disappointed with the album, citing white privilege as the reason for his success. On top of that, the Louisville native came under fire. The heat is because of the artist’s lack of knowledge about Brandy during a radio quiz. Brandy even dropped a diss track in response to the incident.

Lil Uzi Vert Gives Update On New Music

Meanwhile, Lil Uzi Vert is still working on his forthcoming project, “The Pink Tape.” Last week, he updated Twitter regarding the album’s status.

“They just tryna hear the real deal and I only let them hear the fake. I am stepping bad on this album and y’all ain’t hear nothin’, maybe a lil but nothin [flame emoji]. Trust me,” Uzi wrote. “Trust me you will be back they always come back.”

Jack Harlow Responds To Brandy After Her Tweet Following Viral Clip

After a viral clip of Jack Harlow not knowing who Brandy is, caused an online commotion, Brandy responded cheekily via Twitter. The “Boy Is Mine” singer said, “I will murk this dude in rap at 43 on his own beats and then sing his ass to sleep.” Afterward, she explained it was a joke and, in a follow-up tweet, said, “it’s all love.”

It didn’t stop there, however. Jack Harlow responded to Brandy with a social media post of his own. Harlow posted a clip of Ye’s vocals from an older collab with the singer. “Bring Me Down” from the 2005 album “Late Registration” appeared in Harlow’s Instagram story. Some say it was shade; others say it was playful. Regardless, this little internet tiff seems to be over.

Jack Harlow Polarizes Modern Rap

The 24-year-old caught flack from a lot of people on social media. India Arie put her two cents in via Instagram post, saying, “Just because you make black [music] doesn’t mean you know black culture. If U don’t know Brandy’s voice when you hear it …. WHO EVEN ARE YOU?” The responses from other people are more or less lighthearted about the hiccup. However, this debates the rapper’s legitimacy to the forefront. Many people cite mediocrity as a source of the rapper’s success, while others absolutely adore him.

He dropped “Come Home the Kids Miss You” on May 6, which got many negative reviews. Pitchfork, notorious for its pretentious and harsh critiques, scored 2.9 out of 10. The overall consensus is that while Harlow is charming in real life, none of his personality shows in his songs. His single “First Class” is currently viral on TikTok, but even that song is polarizing. Rolling Stone said, “He’s a smooth entertainer with a warm personality, but the Louisville rapper doesn’t seem interested in much beyond dominating the charts.” Despite these conversations, the rapper is still on top and generating buzz. For now, that works for him.

Brandy Responds to Clips of Jack Harlow Learning Ray J Is Her Brother

Earlier today, singer Brandy gave her response to the video of Jack Harlow discovering she and Ray J are siblings.

Using her Twitter account, the singer responded to a video shared by the fan account @4everBrandy.

In the first Tweet, Brandy responded to Harlow saying she could beat him at rapping.

“I will murk this dude in rap at 43 on his own beats and then sing is ass to sleep,” tweeted Brandy.

Hours after the first tweet, Brandy posted a second tweet explaining she was just having fun and that was ‘all love’.

“See, I can have a little fun too❤️ hehe…all love ❤️❤️❤️” wrote Brandy

Finally, Brandy made sure to emphasize that she was joking. Also said she didn’t know Harlow rapped or how big this controversy got.

“I know I’m mad late… but it was a joke ❤️ I didn’t know [Harlow] rapped so I was just Poking 😂 but I see now this was a big thing a few days ago❤️”

India Arie Also Responds to the Clip…In a Different Way

Although Brandy took the controversy in stride— and with a bit of humor— other artists did not.

5 days ago, R&B singer India Arie unleashed her fury on Instagram and expressed her anger at Jack Harlow’s ignorance.

“Just because you make Black music doesn’t mean you know Black culture. If U don’t know Brandy’s voice when you hear it … WHO EVEN ARE YOU?”

“When an ACTUAL MUSICIAN!,” Arie continued, “WHO MAKES BLACK MUSIC! Deduces one of the industries MOST IMPORTANT VOICES @brandy to Ray Jays SISTER? who is famous (mostly) for his Proximity to Kim Kardashians.”

Jack Harlow Interview with Hot 97

An interview with Jack Harlow on Hot 97 went viral last week after Harlow learning that Brandy was Ray J’s relative.

The 24-year-old rapper was a guest on Hot 97 to talk about the release of his second album Come Home The Kids Miss You.

During the live interview, the hosts of Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning played the song Angels In Disguise from Brandy’s Never Say Never Album. Initially, he assumed it was Aaliyah.

Laura Stylez gave him a little clue “she starred in a TV show”. After seeing that didn’t seem to help, Peter Rosenberg gave him another clue “Her brother is the reason why a lot of people are famous, you could argue.” Immediately, Ebro Darden added “her brother had an incredible sex tape.”

After a few seconds of silence, the rapper surprised the hosts with the question: “Who’s Ray J’s sister?”

As a result, everyone in the studio immediately burst out laughing.

“Brandy and Ray J are siblings? Nobody’s ever told me that in my life!,”said Harlow with surprise.

India Arie Gatekeeps Jack Harlow For Not Knowing Brandy

Jack Harlow was in an interview when he said something that some fans find inexcusable. He did not know that Ray J and Brandy are siblings. In fact, he did not know who Brandy even is. India Arie is completely outraged at this and gatekeeps him.

On Hot 97, the host,  Ebro Darden, and his staff played a game with Harlow. They would play a random song and he would guess who made it. They chose the 1998 Brandy song “Angel in Disguise”. Harlow thought it was an Aaliyah song. They decide to give him a few hints, saying “Her brother is the reason why a lot of people are famous.” Another hint was that her brother “had an amazing sex tape,” referring to the Kim Kardashian sex tape from 2007. Harlow was surprised to hear that Ray J had a sister.

Reactions and Gatekeeping

That could have been the end of the story. Harlow learns something new, while he gets clowned at by Twitter. However, India Arie had to also get her two cents in. She gatekeeps Harlow over this on her Instagram, saying that while he makes black music, he is not part of the black community.

“Just because you make black [music] doesnt mean you know black culture. If U dont know Brandys voice when you hear it …. WHO EVEN ARE YOU? When an ACTUAL MUSICIAN! WHO MAKES BLACK MUSIC! Deduces ones of the industries MOST IMPORTANT VOICES! @brandy To Ray Jays SISTER who is famous (mostly) for his Proximity to Kim Kardashians. And WE HEAR @brandy Influence Eh-VER-REE-WHERE! PLENTY of Non Black signers. (Ask them) Even MALE singers. Gospel singers. AND PEOPLE KNOW RAY J BETTER? the sh*ts STUPID. STUPID. STUPID. STUPID!”

Arie’s response has been getting a mixed response. There are some people who are on Arie’s side, while others think that she is getting mad over nothing.
